Yes, I'm going to bitch about RP!Secrets now. Watch me fail.

I'm beginning to wonder if people who lurk games, or even lurk comms like Dear_Mun ever take in to account that playing in a game means that the character isn't going to stay the same forever. I mean, that would be boring, wouldn't it?

Obviously, there's a certain level of ICness that needs to remain. There are things a character wouldn't ever do, or always does, that likely won't change even over the course of life changing events. But that's just it! Character relations, plots, events, major incidents and accidents and whathaveyou. They HAPPEN. Just as in real life, things happen, they meet new people, they grow, they change. Sure some of the underlining characteristics of a person never just up and go away, but life adds on the many complex layers that make a person. Eventually the character you're playing isn't the one of the canon you pulled them from, but your own variation of them, because things that happen in RP games could never logically happen in their own canon.

Saying this now, I'm probably going to get called out at some point on Greg's OOCness as of late, but I suppose if anyone does I'll just ignore it. I mean, clearly if some one is complaining about a long running game that has characters that have been there upwards of two years and they're STILL complaining about OOCness then they really haven't been lurking all that well.

I suppose playing a canon character at all is... weirdly like being overweight. You don't own them. You never did, but in a sense even playing them you own them even less, because everyone has an opinion and they are completely entitled to it and heaven fucking forbid you actually try to justify yourself in any way because that's automatically 'causing wank. They're muses in your head, doing what muses want to do, and the rest of the RP community wants to get up in arms about what you do and how you do it.

This is one of those moments where I just want to take a megaphone ala Love is War, stand on a look out post and proclaim.

"HEY! RP WORLD! SHUT THE HELL UP AND PLAY!"

That is all.

PS

For the record, Dive rocks, no matter what anyone says. *hugs her wonderful RP buddies there*

PPS

The 'overweight' comment comes from a movie called Be Fat Like Me, where an overweight girl comments that being overweight is like not owning your body anymore, because everyone suddenly has the right to an opinion.

I heart you!

This is especially applicable for:

1) Characters whose speech/action/thought patterns do not fit a norm for their age/gender/race/species(?)

and 2) Characters whose behaviors are very easily influenced by other characters.

My Littlesister!Marlene is a great example of this.

On top of being sorta-kinda brand new to RP, Marlene is a character I have never once explored. Her voice is very new (and surprisingly difficult) to me, and I'm trying really, really hard to find it. She's also an extremely complicated character. After all, the girl was genetically engineered to harvest stem cells from dead bodies and eat them. What can you expect?

For one, she's been engineered so her body doesn't age, and her mind has, in a way, left her body behind. So, just because she looks like an 8-year-old, doesn't mean she will completely act and think like one. Sure, she may "dumb down" the way she says things and thinks about things, but that doesn't change their meaning. Equivalent to maybe a 12-year-old, and despite its difficulty for her, she seeks companionship, friends, and she does want to fit in. And she's very adept at sensing even the smallest shifts in mood and atmosphere, and will figure out through conversation exactly how to manipulate it in the way she wants it. Most 8-year-olds that I know aren't that intuitive and empathetic.

On top of that, having been genetically engineered, it's very easy for characters to influence her. Especially darker characters. If they wanted her to start harvesting ADAM from people -- they can give her something that looks like her hypo, add a suggestion or two, and she'll start gunning for people's bellies. (With the mun's permission, of course.)

She's not ALWAYS going to be this static, cute little girl crawling through cupboards carrying a stuffed moogle! Sorry guys. But this is why she's a little sister.

And you're right; it is like having the shell of this wonderful idea... but not being entitled to do whatever you wanted with it despite it being your great idea. And sometimes, it really sucks.

By the way, I tracked you down via [livejournal.com profile] permanent_ooc in order to figure out wtf this AIM chat is because I absolutely FAIL at the whole AIM business! Then I saw this and had to add in my 2 cents, just in case you were wondering. xD

Amen. AUs are especially difficult, and tend to get ignored on Dear_Mun anyway because a lot of people don't seem to grasp the concept, or like how an AU is played just because you're putting a character in to a whole new universe. IDK, there's a lot of gripes about it and you're absolutely right on all these points.

I guess its when people complain about canons that drive me crazy. I mean, Greg Sanders is canoncally goofy, usually fairly optimistic, likes to flirt, ect ect. Generally, a happy guy, right? But you put any person, even happy ones, through too many damn knocks they're going to start to wear thin. Especially when their loved ones are threatened/hurt/taken away from them. Yet I'm just waiting for Greg's recent breakdown to come across some one's screen and for them to start screaming CSI Blasphemy on me. *rolls eyes* Paranoiachachacha.

It's cool about the AIM thing. I honestly have no idea if its up right now. This whole fuxxor'd LJ thing had my computer crash today. I'll put it up tomorrow if its not already up.
