"Where, where?!"
"There! ...no, its gone. Just wait."
Crickets chirped in the dark purple night, the very night that seemed to be breathing life from the sky to the ground the two boys were laying on.
The younger of the two squirmed as the seconds ticked by. Russel's eyes shifted, his smirk barely seen in the dark.
"Stop. It'll happen."
Fletcher released a sigh and shifted for the last time.
"Russel?"
"Yeah?"
"What makes a meteor shower?" Fletcher asked, his voice full of wonder.
"Well," Russel started, sitting up and leaning back on his hands, "Rock. In space. They're falling around the planet all the time, but sometimes they fall a lot at once."
"Oh."
The crickets took up the loudest noise in the field again. The sky was stock still, even the stars themselves seemed to stop twinkling. They could do nothing but watch and wait. This left Fletcher to thinking.
Thinking about why Russel ha dropped everything suddenly and drug him outside in the middle of the night. Why he was smiling so knowingly, like he was holding a sweet secret in his mouth, savoring the taste of it. Thinking about their often distant yet somehow close brotherhood.
Before another thought could escape the confines of his mind, a streak cut the sky, then another, and another. With a gasp Fletcher sat up, and Russel's grin was turned on him.
The sky was suddenly alight, thousands of white tails flew past, a pale glow giving an ethereal feel to the field.
Fletcher couldn't even describe how amazing it was, and he felt that familiar tightness in his throat, on coming tears, but they were ones of happiness.
And just as suddenly as it had started, the sky darkened and it was over.
Fletcher's breath released, unaware that he had been holding it in. Russel was still smiling, his teeth almost luminous in the afterglow.
Fletcher understood now, and as a single tear rolled down his cheek, his own lips parted in a happy smile.
"Thank you, Russel..."
