I couldn't agree more. I decided that after our talk in the LJ maintenance blog where we met, that I would take a peek. I hope you don't mind. I don't have a personal journal yet, but if necessary, I could create one. I mostly put my personal things behind the "My Eyes Only" since I don't like to complicate things.
Ask me a question and I will answer it.
I have seen all kinds of players and there are some that take OOCness to a whole new level which is nauseating. For instance, Merik from Yugioh was made so emo by one particular player that he was nearly unrecognizable. In one entry, he dyed his hair pink and started to wear punkish clothing, but that isn't the worst part.
Imagine if you will, a pale Egyptian and turn him into a Zigfried groupie that pined constantly for the tall pink-haired German. Now, this is where things get really bad....Zigfried isn't interested and Merik goes postal which is way out of his character once the evil has been vanquished from within.
Now, like you, I do understand that a character changes and grows with the times. It's an inevitable part of life that even changes timeless monuments. Moss and age will show up. Now I'm not saying that characters grow moldy like bread atop a refrigerator, but a certain element of change does occur. It has to thus creating development.
Without development, the character does become stale and moldy and we wouldn't want that. It wouldn't taste very good, plus the smell would be terrible. Anyway, the point you made is very clear. A certain level if OOCness is crucial to bend the rules of the element that shaped the character in the first place happens when we want to push as players the boundaries of the comfort bubble.
I'll submit my application to Permanant once I'm a little more awake. I'm starting to crash hard now. Goodnight.
